One Week at a Time
It was a Womb Thing
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has said he would back giving Saddam Hussein and other top Iraqi leaders immunity from possible war crimes charges if they stepped down and accepted exile to avert war.
WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!
I think we are on to something, we ask all leaders around the world who have chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, to step down and accept exile to avert war.
With this in mind I have now become an honorary "Rooting Out Evil" weapons inspector http://rootingoutevil.org a group based in Canada who are going to send inspectors into the USA. You can visit their site and also become a weapons inspector.
I wonder if we will find any !!!!!!
Problem is what are we going to do with them all?- when we pile them all up in a heap.
How high will that pile be??
Mind you I would much rather have been on the humanitarian trip to Bagdad with Betty Williams, the 1967 Nobel Peace Laureate, when she wrote...
.................................................................................................................
It was hard to keep my emotions under control as I moved from bed to bed. The women had such dignity. In the midst of all the dirt, squalor and pain they sat quietly rocking their babies. One beautiful child’s cancer had metastasized to her face. I took the mother’s hand. A quiet understanding passed between us. I could not hold back the tears we cried together for a little while. No words seemed necessary; we were two women, a mother and a grandmother. There were no politics between us; this was deeper than any politic, it was a womb thing.
Betty was there to deliver 15 tons of goods for the children, a drop in the ocean of what they really need. Basic things banned in Iraq by the US/UN Economic Sanctions.
Betty arrived on the first commercial plane to fly into Bagdad for twelve years. Why, because she cared enough to make it happen.
There were so many telling signs in her report a report which received very little press. We are confronted all the time with what the media thinks we want to see. Now that the wheels are turning against the war in Iraq -even in the USA where now over 60% do not want to see a War with Iraq. The press is finally giving a small bit of coverage.
What I got from Betty's report was. People around the world are very willing to work for peace just ask them. The CEO of the Italian Alitalia airlines Mr Mengotzzi offered a plane to fly into the no fly zone.
The UN granted permission for the plane and it's cargo to pass through that no go zone. Why shouldn't they- when we all know in 2001 alone 1˝ million children five and under had died as a direct result of US/UN sanctions.
Captain Belloni who Betty only found out when in the air- happened to be the Alitalia's Chief Pilot he and his crew all volunteers, the cabin crew administration staff of the airline.
As Betty drove through the streets of Bagdad. Houses with boarded up windows, unable to replace the glass so they live most of the time in darkness. Electricity only available a couple of hours each day. THIS HAS BEEN FOR 12 YEARS. No wonder the children are dying.
We have just seen the effect on the families in Canberra, Australian's Capital Hill. Where fires have destroyed over 400 homes and 20% of families had to go without basics like power water, gas, for a few hours or a few days.
In days it was feared it would be catastrophic if these basics where not repaired so they worked around the clock.
The horror the people of Canberra went through, is no different then - the horror the mothers in Bagdad are going through - just on a much bigger scale which has continued for 12 years.
A few comments from ordinary people Betty spoke to in Bagdad.
“We are caught between two evils”, one woman told me. “We will be innocent bystanders in a war we cannot stop”. A tear rolled down her cheek. “I lost my husband in the Gulf War; I do not want to lose my sons”.
“I have 100 students in my class”, the young teacher told me. The school library has only a few books and it is impossible to get school supplies.
“A clean water supply; we desperately need help to supply clean water to our people”, an elderly engineer told me.
“I don’t care about Saddam Hussein or George Bush”, one of the waiters said. “I just want to live in peace and feed my wife and children”.
Like Betty, I have no political axe to grind, no party politics to play. I only have my truth to tell clearly and distinctly.
To attack Iraq would not only be barbaric, it would be inhuman.
Like Betty said.
It's was a womb thing that have brought her and I together.
It was Betty who told Arsenio Rodriguez and the Global Strategic Alliance group now being formed, about One Mind One Voice and what we are trying to do in our own small way. A group who are now working on how the two groups can merge together. I can't wait to part of their/our group as they have the resources to get the One Mind One Voice message across very quickly. A simple message that We are A Family of Humanity. That "We are part of this planet- we don't own it!"
I am happy to report that the time is getting closer, when Betty and myself will meet in person. The time is getting closer when her and I will work together on things which will make it a better world for Caitlin and all other children.
The reason why. It's a womb thing, something most politicians would never understand.
Why don't we extend the exile offer to any leader who is inhuman!!
Lets put them all on an Island together and they can threaten, sanction, pre-empt, attack and bomb each other- leaving the children to play, learn and grow- like they should be, even in Bagdad.
Maybe it would be cheaper just to give them a womb!!
Have a nice day, I will watching Councils like Herberton in Far North Queensland voted in Council against the war in Iraq. Why does it not surprise me that the Mayor of Herberton's name is Anne Portess.
